Originally appearing in 2005 as a BOM on Judy’s web site, Celtic Squares has been reimagined and improved upon, adding a beautiful pieced border in the queen-size version and adding a simpler, smaller version as well.
The pattern is 24 pages long because it also contains a treasure trove of useful information on how to make a quilt easily, accurately, and with a minimum of fuss. No one knows quilt design and quilt making like Judy Martin.
Celtic Squares comes in 2 sizes: 93” x 93” and 51” x 51”. It has patch counts, yardage, cutting diagrams, exploded piecing diagrams, quilt construction diagrams, an alternate coloring, detailed instructions for strip piecing or rotary cutting patches, and tips and helpful hints.
Judy rates her patterns with 1-3 rotary cutters, spools, and light bulbs to show how easy or challenging the cutting, sewing, and thinking are, with 1 being the easiest. Celtic Squares in the queen size has 1 rotary cutter which means the cutting is easy, with mostly strip-pieced squares and rectangles. The sewing is also easy, but one partial seam pushes it to 2 spools. (The pattern gives detailed instructions on how to do the partial seam.) To make the quilt involves keeping track of a number of units. That’s why it has 3 light bulbs. The wall or lap quilt size has no partial seam and not many units to keep track of. Therefore, it’s easy 1’s across the board.
